To enhance navigational safety for all water users, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has laid water buoys from Gbajibo in Niger State to Gbajibo-Mundi in Kwara State.
According to a press statement issued by Suleiman Makama, AGM (Corporate Affairs), the number of buoys used were 10 red colours and 6 green colours.
“The river is generally deep with the least depth of 21.3m. The NIWA is taking this proactive step towards safeguarding our waterways.
“These buoys serve as critical markers, indicating safe navigation channels, warning of hazards and designating protected areas”, the statement said.
It may be recalled that during the 2025 Management Retreat, the Managing Director/CEO of NIWA, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, FCIB emphasised on safety regulations and improve operational efficiency across the nation’s Inland Waterways.
