During the award presentation to Dr Farinto, NAGAFF National President, Chief Tochukwu Ezisi described Farinto as a ” Friend of NAGAFF” whom he has been working closely with and will continue to work with as a professional and well grounded colleague in the maritime industry.
Speaking at the sideline of the event to journalists, the elated Dr Farinto said he was happy about the NAGAFF award ” Am very happy and excited for this award coming from a sister association, NAGAFF, it shows they are appreciating my efforts in the maritime industry.
On industry issue, when asked to asses the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, Farinto said is too early , but from what he has been able to do, he is on the right track. ” The Customs CG is a trained professional officer, though is too early to asses him, but he is on the right track with some of the policies he is putting in place. Let’s give him time I trust Wale Adeniyi, he will deliver.
On the fluctuating exchange rate which is affecting imported goods, he said ” That is why I have been advocating for government to give us mitigants. The way government is charging VAT on some imported goods is wrong. Also, the 7% port levy, the ports are in the hands of private organisations, why is government still charging 7% port levy?.
” Also the policy on used vehicles, it should be increase to 15 years age limit. The car am using is 2009, how many Nigerians can afford these vehicles? We are not producing vehicles, so government should look at the yearning of the masses.
” I have taken upon myself to write to the Minister of Finance to look into these issues to help mitigate the sufferings of importers and their agents due to the unstable exchange rate which bounce back to Nigerians who are buying this goods, they say they are working on it, lets see what the come out with.”
Asked if he is working with the new ANLCA NECOM, Farinto said” I will love to used the words of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who says if they call for my input , I will oblarge, but if they don’t need my input, I will not, so they won’t say , what did he forgot in the office, that he is looking for.?
Farinto also said that , he wouldn’t know the efforts the new ANLCA NECOM is making to alleviate the sufferings of its members, while also noting that the five years protracted crises that rocked the association might have cause both parties over N250million.
